Our story

A house, restored slowly

How an empty townhouse became twelve rooms, a kitchen and a garden worth staying for.
Since 1680
We didn’t want to make the house new. We wanted it to feel as if it had simply been looked after. Most of what you see is original; the rest was made nearby.

Three storeys around a courtyard, with a stable wing and a garden running down to the lane.

Empty, but standing

After eleven years empty, the roof leaked and the garden had gone wild, but the floors and beams were sound.

Four years of restoration

Local builders, lime plaster and as much of the old timber as we could save. The fig tree survived it all.

Today

Twelve rooms and a long table

A small team, most of whom live within walking distance, and a house that’s full most weekends.

“The house was here long before us. We’re looking after it for a while.”

Stay a while longer.
