KT-4 field recorder / 32-bit float / 4 inputs

Record the room you’re standing in.

Four quiet preamps, 32-bit float and a body that fits a coat pocket. Never ride a gain knob again — the KT-4 keeps the whisper and the thunderclap in the same take.

Engineered for the field.

The KT-4 is built around one idea: the sound you came for shouldn’t depend on where you set the gain. Everything else stays out of the way.
01

32-bit float, dual converters

Two converters per channel run in parallel and merge in real time. Set it, forget it, and fix levels later without lifting the noise floor.
02

Four locking combo inputs

XLR/TRS on every channel with 48V phantom, and preamps quiet enough for distant birdsong at −128 dBu EIN.
03

14 hours in the field

Two AA cells, a USB-C power bank or both — with hot-swap, so a long take never stops.
04

Timecode and app control

A built-in TCXO holds sync with cameras for a full day. Arm, name and mark takes from your phone.

Field note 014 · 05:12 · Dawn chorus

Peaked at +9 dBFS. Kept every note.

A blackbird landed a metre from the capsules mid-take. On a 24-bit recorder that’s a ruined file. On the KT-4 it’s a gain move in post.

What does 32-bit float actually change?
It gives the file around 1,500 dB of headroom. As long as the analogue stage doesn’t overload — and the KT-4 takes up to +24 dBu — any level can be pulled back in post with no added noise.
Can I use it as a USB audio interface?
Yes. Connect it to a Mac, PC, iPad or Android phone over USB-C and it appears as a class-compliant 4-in, 2-out interface. No drivers needed.
Which microphones work with it?
Any dynamic, condenser or lavalier mic with an XLR or 3.5 mm TRS plug. Every input has switchable 48V phantom and plug-in power.
What cards and batteries does it take?
microSDXC cards up to 1 TB (V30 or faster) and two AA cells — alkaline, NiMH or lithium. USB-C power can run at the same time.
Is there an app?
The free Kilotone Field app for iOS and Android arms, names and marks takes, and installs firmware updates. It never needs an account.
