Portals and members
A portal turns a website into a place where signed-in members see their own records: orders, invoices, tickets, bookings, courses. Set a website's kind to Portal or Web App and manage it from Portal in the admin.
Starting a portal
Pick a starter. Each sets up the portal settings, the sign-in pages, ready data sources with list, detail and "new" pages, and a dashboard:
Customer portal, Client dashboard, Support portal, Knowledge portal, Admin dashboard, Booking portal, Partner portal, Member portal, Employee portal and Student portal.
Or describe the portal in a sentence with Build my portal and the AI picks the starter, the sign-up rule and the records to include. Without AI, a keyword match makes the plan, so the button always works.
Members
A member is a site account with the Portal Member role plus a membership of one website, with a status, portal roles and the record they are linked to, such as their Customer, Supplier, Employee or Student. "Only my records" reads that link.
- Sign-up is open, needs approval, or is by invitation only.
- The members screen lists and invites members, approves pending ones, disables accounts and edits their roles and linked record.
- Preview as a member shows the portal exactly as that member sees it, read-only.
Ways to sign in
Password, Google, Microsoft, GitHub or any OpenID provider, the company directory through LDAP, a one-time link by email, or a six-digit code by SMS (see Sign-in providers).
Pages
The portal's own pages, added in one click and wearing the website's header, footer and theme: sign in, join, forgot password, and the member's account page. Any page can be limited to everyone, signed-in members, or chosen portal roles. A members-only page is never sent to a visitor who may not see it, and is left out of the sitemap.
Notifications and audit
- A member's bell collects notices; rules can also send email or SMS when a record is created, changed, deleted or moved to a state.
- The audit log records sign-ins, views, creates, changes and deletes per website.
- Access checks walk the portal's pages, elements, menus and data sources and report anything that could show a member someone else's data.
Install as an app
A portal can be installed on a phone's home screen. It has its own name, colour and icon, and shows a friendly offline page when there is no connection.
